Fixed-value redemptions replaced by variable award pricing

During March 2025 (date approximate; announced March 11 and documented in effect by late March), Southwest ended its long-standing practice of pegging award prices to base fares at a near-fixed value and introduced variable redemption rates that rise on higher-demand flights. Observed redemption values immediately ranged from roughly 1.1 to 1.7 cents per point depending on the flight, and subsequent independent analysis found average values declining toward 1.1 cents from a prior fixed floor around 1.4 cents. The change removed the predictability that had distinguished Rapid Rewards among US programs and coincided with a broader overhaul that added bag fees and basic fares from May 28, 2025. Rapid Rewards receives transfers from Chase Ultimate Rewards at 1:1.

What to do: Compare cash and points on every Southwest booking; a fixed cents-per-point value can no longer be assumed.
