On July 23, American Express did something quietly that it hadn't done in the card's 57-year history: it removed the Green Card from its website. Not a redesign, not a waitlist — gone. Application pages started returning errors, and within hours, even cardholders' refer-a-friend links stopped working. If you've tried clicking an "apply" link for the Green Card anywhere on the internet this week, you've probably landed on Amex's generic card page, wondering if you'd lost your mind. You haven't. The card is simply closed to new applicants.
Here's what we actually know, what's speculation, and what to do about it — whether you hold the card or were hoping to get it.
What happened, exactly
Two things, two months apart. First, back in June, Amex began notifying existing Green cardholders that their card would be renamed the "American Express Classic Green Card" on August 20, 2026. Amex was explicit that nothing else changes — same $150 annual fee, same 3x on travel, transit, and dining, same CLEAR Plus credit. Cardholders don't need to do anything.
Then, on July 23, the card vanished from Amex's site entirely. Doctor of Credit spotted it first, and Frequent Miler confirmed within hours that referral links had died too. No announcement, no explanation. As of this writing, there is no public way to apply for an Amex Green Card.
The one back door that's still open
If you already hold an Amex Gold or Platinum, you can still reach the Green Card the old-fashioned way: a product change (downgrade). Call the number on the back of your card or use chat. Whether that stays open past August 20 is anyone's guess, so if a $150 Membership Rewards card is genuinely what you want, don't sit on it. Why "Classic" is the interesting word
Companies don't rename a product "Classic" for fun. You call something Classic when you're about to put something new next to it. Amex has spent two years overhauling its lineup — the Gold refresh, then the Platinum's move to $895 and a stack of credits — and the Green was the last card left untouched since 2019. Pulling it from sale weeks before the rename looks a lot like clearing the shelf.
Our honest read: a new Green Card is probably coming, and if it follows the Gold and Platinum pattern, expect a higher fee and more statement credits to offset it. But let's be clear about what's confirmed versus what's tea-leaf reading. Confirmed: the card is unavailable, and the rename happens August 20. Everything else — a launch date, new benefits, a new fee — is speculation, ours included. Amex has said nothing.
If you hold the Green Card today
Nothing bad happens to you. Your card works, your points are safe, your benefits are untouched — the name on your statements changes on August 20 and that's it. Two practical notes, though. First, if you pay for CLEAR Plus, make sure it's charged to this card so the credit (up to $209 a year) isn't going to waste — it's the card's single best perk. Second, don't cancel in anticipation of a shinier new version. If a refreshed Green launches, existing holders usually get the new benefits or an upgrade path; canceling now just costs you a long-standing account.
If you wanted the Green Card — what to open instead
The Green occupied a specific slot: transferable Amex points at a modest fee. With it gone, the honest alternatives are:
American Express Gold — the natural step up. 4x on dining and U.S. supermarkets is a stronger everyday engine than the Green's 3x ever was, and the credits can offset most of the $325 fee if they match how you live. This is where most would-be Green applicants should actually look.
Chase Sapphire Preferred — the direct competitor at nearly the Green's old price point. $95, transferable points, broad 3x categories after its June refresh, and a $100 hotel credit that roughly cancels the fee. If the Green's appeal was "real travel card, small fee," this is that — arguably done better.

The bottom line
The Amex Green Card isn't dead; it's offstage. Existing holders keep everything and become "Classic" on August 20. New applicants are locked out for now, with a downgrade from Gold or Platinum as the only path in. And the smart money says Amex is about to show us why.
