Chase Sapphire Reserve for Business Caps 3X Advertising at $1 Million Starting November 15

Chase is adding a $1 million annual cap to the Sapphire Reserve for Business 3X category for social media and search advertising. Starting November 15, 2026, spending above that threshold will earn 1X instead of 3X. The card is also gaining two additional $250 The Edit credits in 2027.

Starting November 15, 2026, Chase Sapphire Reserve for Business cardholders will earn 3X Ultimate Rewards points on only the first $1 million spent each account anniversary year on social media and search-engine advertising. Spending above $1 million will earn 1X. The same announcement adds two more $250 The Edit credits beginning January 1, 2027.

What exactly changed

Chase is changing the Sapphire Reserve for Business advertising category from uncapped 3X earning to a $1 million annual cap.

Through November 14, qualifying social media and search-engine advertising purchases continue to earn 3X without this cap. Beginning November 15, cardholders earn 3X on the first $1 million in that category during each account anniversary year. Once the $1 million threshold is reached, additional spending earns 1X.

The change is paired with an improvement elsewhere: starting January 1, 2027, The Edit hotel benefit increases from two $250 credits to four $250 credits, for up to $1,000 per year. The two-night prepaid booking requirement remains.

Who is affected and the honest math

This matters primarily to businesses putting very large amounts of social-media or search-engine advertising on the card.

At exactly $1 million of qualifying annual advertising, the card still generates 3 million Ultimate Rewards points from that category. A business spending $1.2 million would earn 3.2 million points under the new rules: 3 million points on the first $1 million and 200,000 on the remaining $200,000.

Under the old uncapped structure, that same $1.2 million would have earned 3.6 million points. The difference is 400,000 Ultimate Rewards points.

The break point is therefore straightforward: spending above $1 million in the category loses 2 points per dollar compared with the old 3X rate. Chase confirms there is no maximum on the category itself; the rate simply falls back to 1X after the $1 million threshold.

The new $1,000 annual The Edit ceiling is a separate benefit. It does not directly compensate a business for lost advertising rewards because extracting all $1,000 requires four separate $250 credits, each tied to a prepaid stay of at least two nights. NerdWallet notes that maximizing all four requires at least eight nights at participating properties.

What to do

If your business will spend more than $1 million a year on qualifying advertising, map your account-anniversary date and the November 15 change before deciding where that incremental spend should go.

If you are below $1 million, the new cap does not change the earning rate on your current advertising spend.

If you regularly use The Edit, note the January 1, 2027 increase to four $250 credits. If you do not already have enough qualifying hotel stays to use the existing two credits, the additional $500 should not automatically be counted as $500 of usable value.

For businesses approaching the $1 million threshold, keep records of qualifying advertising spend rather than assuming the cap resets on January 1. Chase defines the relevant period as the account anniversary year.

The pattern it fits

This is another example of the coupon-book structure becoming more complicated: one benefit expands while a high-earning category acquires a ceiling. Bonus Eagle has previously covered the Sapphire Reserve's $795 annual-fee structure and the importance of valuing only credits and benefits you will actually use.

The important distinction here is scale. The advertising change is material only for businesses spending above $1 million annually in the affected category; the The Edit increase is potentially useful only for businesses already booking enough qualifying luxury-hotel stays.

The bottom line

The Sapphire Reserve for Business is not losing its 3X advertising category outright. Starting November 15, 2026, 3X applies only to the first $1 million in qualifying social-media and search advertising per account anniversary year; spending above that earns 1X. The card simultaneously adds up to $500 more in annual The Edit credits beginning January 1, 2027.

FAQs

When does the 3X advertising cap begin?

November 15, 2026. Before then, the qualifying category earns 3X without the new $1 million threshold.

What happens after $1 million of advertising spend?

Qualifying spending above the $1 million annual threshold earns 1X instead of 3X. There is no overall spending prohibition.

Does the $1 million limit reset every January?

No. Chase defines the relevant period as the account anniversary year, beginning November 15, 2026 for the first affected period and subsequently following the account's anniversary cycle.

Did the Sapphire Reserve for Business also get a benefit increase?

Yes. Beginning January 1, 2027, The Edit benefit increases from two $250 credits to four $250 credits, or up to $1,000 per calendar year. The minimum two-night prepaid-stay requirement remains.
