PenFed Pathfinder Annual Fee Waiver Ending September 28: $95 Fee Now Unavoidable

PenFed has notified Pathfinder Rewards cardholders that the $95 annual fee can no longer be waived for Honors Advantage members beginning September 28, 2026. The $100 airline incidental credit and other benefits remain, but the net value equation changes.

PenFed has begun mailing letters to Pathfinder Rewards Visa Signature cardholders. Effective September 28, 2026, the $95 annual fee is no longer eligible to be waived.

The change ends a long-standing advantage for Honors Advantage members — those with military affiliation or a qualifying PenFed checking account — who previously paid no annual fee while still receiving the card's $100 annual domestic airline incidental credit, Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit, and complimentary Priority Pass membership. Late fees are also increasing.

What exactly changed

Cardholders received a paper notice summarizing two account-term changes effective September 28, 2026. First, the account will be charged an annual fee of $95, and this fee is no longer eligible to be waived. Second, the late fee increases to up to $30 for the first occurrence and up to $35 for subsequent occurrences until six consecutive on-time minimum payments are made.

Previously, Honors Advantage status — military service or primary ownership of both the card and a qualifying PenFed checking account such as Access America or Free Checking — waived the fee entirely. That path is closed after the effective date. Transfers of points and other core earning rates are unchanged in the notice.

Who it actually affects and the honest math

Anyone currently holding the Pathfinder with a waived fee is affected. New applicants after the change will also face the full $95 fee.

The card's remaining benefits still include up to $100 in annual domestic airline ancillary credits (baggage, seat fees, inflight purchases, and similar), a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application credit, and Priority Pass membership (visits are not free). For cardholders who reliably use the $100 airline credit each year, the net annual cost becomes approximately zero before considering any other value from Priority Pass or the travel and dining earn rates. Those who do not use the airline credit will now pay a true $95 for the remaining perks.

Points continue to redeem at a floor of 0.85 cents and up to 1 cent in some cases, and there are still no foreign-transaction fees. The card remains non-transferable to airline or hotel partners.

What to do about it

Review your anniversary date and the exact language in the letter. If the $100 airline incidental credit is already part of your routine and you value the Priority Pass membership, the card can still break even or better after September 28. If you opened or held the card primarily because the fee was zero, calculate whether the remaining benefits justify $95 and decide whether to keep or cancel before the fee posts.

Confirm whether your Honors Advantage status (and any elevated earn rates that previously accompanied it) continues unchanged; the letter focuses on the fee waiver itself. No action is required to "accept" the change — the new terms take effect automatically.

The pattern it fits

Credit unions and smaller issuers have been tightening or eliminating fee-waiver pathways that made mid-tier cards effectively free for qualifying members. This sits alongside the broader industry pattern of benefit adjustments that shift net value even when headline rewards rates stay the same. Our Devaluation Tracker logs these structural shifts so the cumulative effect is visible over time.

The bottom line

The Pathfinder is no longer a no-annual-fee card for anyone after September 28, 2026. Its remaining credits can still offset the fee for disciplined users of the airline incidental benefit; for others the value proposition narrows. Review the letter, run the simple math against your actual usage, and decide before the first post-change fee appears.

Frequently asked questions

When does the $95 annual fee start applying?
September 28, 2026. The fee is no longer eligible to be waived after that date. Existing cardholders received paper notice of the change.

Do I still get the $100 airline incidental credit?
Yes. The notice does not remove the annual domestic airline ancillary credit, the Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit, or Priority Pass membership. Those benefits continue under the new fee structure.

Does Honors Advantage status still raise my earn rates?
The letter addresses only the fee waiver and late fees. Confirm directly with PenFed whether any elevated travel or dining rates tied to Honors Advantage remain in effect after September 28.

Should I cancel before the fee posts?
Only if the remaining benefits do not cover or exceed $95 in value for you. Cardholders who reliably use the $100 airline credit can still reach break-even; those who do not should weigh cancellation against any other open accounts and credit-utilization effects.
