Elite seat selection and upgrades eliminated on Basic Economy tickets
For Basic Economy tickets purchased on or after May 18, 2026 (announced April 9, 2026), AAdvantage elite members are no longer eligible for complimentary advance seat selection, complimentary domestic upgrades, or systemwide upgrades. The restriction applies to all elite tiers and also to elite members of oneworld partner programs. Combined with the December 2025 elimination of mileage earning, Basic Economy fares now carry essentially no AAdvantage recognition beyond boarding priority and elite checked-bag allowances. Basic Economy checked bags also began costing $5 more than on standard economy fares on the same date.
What to do: Elites who want any status benefits should book Main Cabin or higher on American.
