As part of its 2026 program update announced on December 8, 2025, United said that beginning in February 2027 it will retire the fixed chart for PlusPoints upgrade amounts and move to a dynamic system in which the points required vary by route, cabin, timing, and demand. This removes pricing predictability from a core elite benefit. The same announcement included some positive changes, such as upgrades becoming available on award tickets from February 1, 2026.
What to do: Use banked PlusPoints on the fixed chart before February 2027.
companion inherits sponsor's earned status → companion capped at Premier Gold (1 Million Milers only)
Announced March 6, 2025 and effective for the 2027 program year (date approximate; United says "starting in 2027"), companions designated by 1 Million Miler members will receive Premier Gold status rather than inheriting the sponsor's highest earned status. Previously, a 1 Million Miler who earned Premier Platinum, 1K, or Global Services could pass that full status to a spouse, partner, or household member each year. Companions of 2 Million Milers and above are unaffected and continue to receive the sponsor's earned status, and companions traveling on the same reservation as the member still receive certain higher-status benefits at the airport. United confirmed the change by email to affected members, citing the long lead time as deliberate advance notice.
What to do: 1MM companions keep the sponsor's full earned status through the end of 2026; plan any status-dependent travel accordingly.
included on any fare → bundle purchase required
Announced in late August 2026 and effective for tickets purchased on or after January 1, 2027, Frontier Miles elite members booked on the cheapest Basic fares will no longer receive complimentary seat selection or waivers of change and cancellation fees. Complimentary upgrades to UpFront Plus seating and to Frontier's upcoming first class product will require the purchase of an Economy or Premium bundle, ending upgrades for elites buying base fares. The same announcement lowered the Elite Diamond qualification threshold from 100,000 to 75,000 status points and promised new milestone rewards for 2027, so the package mixes cuts with improvements, but the elite benefits themselves become conditional on buying up.
What to do: Frontier elites who value seat selection, fee waivers, or upgrades should budget for bundles from 2027 — or buy tickets before January 1.
moderate2026-12-08Qantas · Qantas Frequent FlyerElevatedbenefit removed Points Club / Points Club Plus / Green Tier + Loyalty Bonus → Tiers retired; single higher requalification targets with status-credit rollover
Announced in August 2026 and effective December 8, 2026, Qantas is retiring Points Club, Points Club Plus, and Green Tier, and ending the Loyalty Bonus, as part of a broader Frequent Flyer overhaul. From 2027, status requalification moves to single higher targets, partially offset by a new status-credit rollover. The changes primarily affect status earners rather than award pricing; US members who transfer points to Qantas from Capital One or U.S. Bank are unaffected on redemptions but lose the retired membership tiers' perks if they held them.
What to do: If you hold a retiring tier, use its perks before December 8; award pricing is unchanged for transferred points.
moderate2026-10-25Citi · AAdvantage (Platinum Select and Globe cards converted from Barclays Aviator)Elevatedbenefit removed Cardholders whose Barclays AAdvantage Aviator Red and Aviator Silver cards were migrated to Citi on April 24, 2026 (becoming the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select and Citi AAdvantage Globe, respectively) were told the legacy benefits carried over from Barclays would end on October 25, 2026. Former Aviator Red holders lose the $25 anniversary Wi-Fi credit; former Aviator Silver holders lose 2X earning on car rentals and hotels, the $25 daily food and beverage credit, and the $50 anniversary Wi-Fi credit. Both groups lose the American Airlines Companion Certificate after one final earning at their next anniversary, and the up-to-15,000 additional Loyalty Points benefit ends after the qualification period closing February 28, 2027. Citi notified affected cardholders on August statements; standard Citi card benefits are unchanged.
What to do: If the companion certificate was your reason for keeping the card, note your next anniversary date and decide before the following renewal.
FedEx, Grubhub, office supply stores → Grubhub, office supply stores
American Express is removing FedEx as an eligible merchant for the Business Gold card's Flexible Business Credit, which pays up to $20 per month (up to $240 per year) in statement credits. Amex's card page now states that FedEx purchases qualify only through October 1, 2026; from October 2 the credit can be used only at Grubhub and U.S. office supply stores. The change first appeared in cardholder terms on April 2, 2026, was briefly retracted as an error, and was confirmed by an Amex spokesperson in May 2026. Amex has not said whether another merchant will replace FedEx, and the $240 annual cap is unchanged.
What to do: If FedEx was your monthly trigger, make an October 1 purchase for the final credit and switch to office supply stores or Grubhub afterward.
minor2026-10-01Chase · Ultimate Rewards (Sapphire Preferred card)High Riskbenefit removed 10% anniversary points bonus → no anniversary bonus
As part of the June 2026 Sapphire Preferred refresh, Chase is retiring the card's 10% anniversary points bonus, which since 2021 has paid cardholders one bonus point per $10 of total purchases each cardmember year. The removal applied immediately to new applicants on or after June 15, 2026; cardholders who applied before that date continue to earn the bonus on purchases made through October 1, 2026, with final bonus points posting by January 31, 2027. The change first surfaced in early May 2026 via an early in-app notice that Chase later confirmed, and it also applies alongside the separate cut in the card's Hyatt transfer ratio announced in the same refresh. New 3x categories on gas, EV charging, and vacation rentals were added at the same time with no change to the $95 annual fee.
What to do: Existing cardholders' spend through October 1, 2026 still counts; the final bonus posts by January 31, 2027.
minor2026-10-01American Express · Membership Rewards (Platinum, Business Platinum and Centurion cards)High Riskbenefit removed Lufthansa Business and Senator Lounge access (Platinum) → no access
Effective October 1, 2026, American Express and Lufthansa are ending their lounge agreement, and the Platinum Card, Business Platinum Card and Centurion Card will no longer grant access to any Lufthansa lounge. The change was announced April 10, 2026. Until then, Platinum cardholders flying a Lufthansa Group airline could enter Lufthansa Business Lounges on any ticket and Senator Lounges on a business class ticket, while Centurion cardholders could access Lufthansa First Class Lounges in Frankfurt and Munich. Centurion Lounge, Priority Pass and other Global Lounge Collection access is unaffected.
What to do: Transits through Frankfurt or Munich before September 30 can still use the benefit; after that, only Priority Pass-affiliated lounges remain.
moderate2026-09-28PenFed · Pathfinder Rewards Visa SignatureStablefee increase $0 (waived for Honors Advantage members) → $95
Effective September 28, 2026, PenFed eliminated the annual-fee waiver on the Pathfinder Rewards Visa Signature card — Honors Advantage members (military affiliation or qualifying PenFed checking) previously paid no annual fee while keeping the card's $100 airline incidental credit, Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit, and Priority Pass membership. The $95 fee now applies to all cardholders, and late fees rise to up to $30 for a first occurrence and $35 thereafter. The change was communicated by paper letter; earning rates and credits were unchanged in the notice.
What to do: If you reliably use the $100 airline credit, the card can still break even; if the zero fee was the point, decide before the first fee posts.
minor2026-09-20Citi · ThankYou Rewards (ThankYou Mastercard)Elevatedbenefit removed Effective September 20, 2026, holders of the Citi ThankYou Mastercard can no longer transfer ThankYou Points to JetBlue TrueBlue. The prior ratio for this card was 1:0.7. Citi confirmed the change applies only to the ThankYou Mastercard; other no-annual-fee ThankYou cards retain access at their existing rates. Transfers completed before the cutoff are unaffected.
What to do: Transfer any needed points before September 20 if you hold only the ThankYou Mastercard.
lowest Standard (current) → Light (same miles) / Standard (+25–30% miles)
Effective September 8, 2026, Flying Blue introduces Light, Standard, and Flex award fare options for all new reward bookings on Air France and KLM operated flights. The previous lowest award prices move into the restricted Light tier (no changes or refunds, limited or no checked bags, no advance seat selection, and no lounge access even in business class). Standard awards—the closest equivalent to today’s awards—cost roughly 25–30% more miles while restoring most prior benefits (checked bags, lounge access in business, changes/refunds for a fee). Flex awards cost substantially more miles but include free changes/refunds and lower cash taxes in some cases. Partner awards and mixed itineraries are unaffected. Elite status can override many Light restrictions.
What to do: Book any needed Air France/KLM awards before September 8 to lock current unrestricted terms; after that date, compare Light vs Standard carefully or use partner-program awards.
Effective September 1, 2026, Aeromexico elite status and premium-cabin tickets no longer grant Salón Premier lounge access on itineraries that are entirely within Mexico. Access on domestic-only trips now requires an Aeromexico co-branded credit card or a paid day pass. Itineraries that include an international connection still qualify for access. The change was communicated directly to members; whether SkyTeam Elite Plus members from partner airlines are affected was not specified in the notice.
What to do: Domestic-only Aeromexico flyers who rely on lounge access: the co-brand card becomes the only free path in from September 1.
minor2026-09-01Chase · Sapphire Lounge network (Phoenix)High Riskbenefit removed Free advance reservations (14 days–24 hrs out) via Chase app → Walk-up only
Without an announcement, Chase removed the advance-reservation feature at the Sapphire Lounge by The Club at Phoenix Sky Harbor — the only location in its network that offered reservations. Chase's lounge page states August 24, 2026 was the last day to book; existing reservations are honored through August 31, and from September 1 the lounge is walk-up only. Chase confirmed the sunset to Thrifty Traveler. The removal follows the August 15 elimination of Priority Pass access across Sapphire Lounges, and coincides with the Phoenix location's expansion, due to finish by end of summer. Access rules themselves are unchanged for Sapphire Reserve, Reserve for Business, J.P. Morgan Reserve, and Ritz-Carlton cardholders.
What to do: Reservations already booked work through August 31; after that, arrive with margin — entry stays limited to within three hours of a nonstop departure.
Effective August 25, 2026, on nine premium transcontinental and Hawaii routes that offer a Premium Economy cabin, AAdvantage elite members booked in economy are eligible for complimentary upgrades only to Premium Economy — no longer through to business class. The change ends double-cabin upgrades on these routes; elites booked in Premium Economy can still upgrade to business. American announced the change on its AAdvantage program updates page.
What to do: Elites on these routes: an economy ticket no longer has a path to business — book Premium Economy if the business upgrade matters to you.
65,000 → 90,000
Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles unannouncedly increased the mileage cost for upgrading from Economy to Business Class on transatlantic routes within 72 hours of departure. The stealth adjustment increases the required miles from 65,000 to 90,000 per direction, catching members off guard during peak booking windows. This change affects transfer partners across major US credit card rewards programs that utilize Turkish Airlines for Star Alliance redemption value.
What to do: Evaluate direct Business Class award bookings or alternative Star Alliance partner programs before transferring flexible points for last-minute upgrades.
moderate2026-08-24Chase · Marriott Bonvoy (Ritz-Carlton card)High Riskbenefit removed 6-hr delay / $10,000 purchase protection (per guide) → 12-hr / $500 (per marketing page; unconfirmed)
On August 24, 2026, Traveling For Miles reported that the Ritz-Carlton card's public benefits page no longer matches its Guide to Benefits, with every difference unfavorable: trip delay coverage shown as 12 hours instead of six, purchase protection as $500 per item instead of $10,000, and trip cancellation and emergency evacuation coverage absent entirely. The current Guide to Benefits (dated June 11, 2026) still reflects the stronger terms, no cardholder notices have been reported, and Chase has not confirmed whether the change is real or a page error — a pattern seen twice before on Chase web pages in 2025–26. Claims are governed by the Guide, not the marketing page.
What to do: Download and save the current dated Guide to Benefits today; a webpage edit alone doesn't change coverage — watch for a formal benefit-change notice.
minor2026-08-20Hilton · Hilton Honors (Price Match Guarantee)Elevatedbenefit removed claim allowed before booking → direct booking required before claim
Effective August 20, 2026, Hilton tightened its Price Match Guarantee (formerly Best Rate Guarantee). Members must now complete a direct Hilton booking before filing a claim, reversing the prior process in which a claim could be submitted and approved before any money was committed — a meaningful risk shift for non-refundable rates. Claims can no longer be processed by phone and must go through the online form, and Hilton no longer matches rates found on mobile apps or mobile websites, comparing only against desktop website prices net of taxes and fees. Successful claims still receive the matched rate plus an additional discount for the stay.
What to do: Book the Hilton rate first and file the claim immediately after; screenshot the competing rate before booking.
moderate2026-08-15Chase · Chase Sapphire Lounge by The ClubHigh Riskbenefit removed Effective August 15, 2026, Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club locations no longer participate in the Priority Pass or LoungeKey networks. Priority Pass members lose the previous one complimentary visit per year and the $75 discounted entry rate; day passes (when available) are now the standard $100 rate. At the same time, eligible Chase cardholders on connecting itineraries may enter up to five hours before their connecting flight’s departure (previously three hours). Originating/nonstop flights remain limited to three hours before departure. Eligible cards (Sapphire Reserve, Sapphire Reserve for Business, J.P. Morgan Reserve, Ritz-Carlton) keep unlimited complimentary access.
What to do: Priority Pass holders who want a final complimentary visit should go before August 15. Eligible Chase cardholders gain a longer layover window.
6% Uber One credits on rides → 5%
In an email to members sent around August 15, 2026, Uber announced that eligible rides will earn 5% back in Uber One credits instead of 6%, effective "in the coming weeks" with no firm date given; the date above is the announcement date. Credits remain redeemable on rides and Uber Eats orders, and the same email added household sharing (one additional adult plus teens) and 10% credits on hotel bookings through Uber. The cut reduces bonus earning by one-sixth and raises the ride spend needed to recoup the $96 annual membership from $1,600 to $1,920, per View from the Wing. The change is relevant to cardholders because the American Express Platinum card covers Uber One membership through a statement credit, and the American Express Gold card has carried similar offers, so the perk those credits pay for is now worth less.
What to do: If your Uber One is free via a card credit, nothing to do; if you pay cash for it, re-run the break-even math at 5%.
minor2026-08-10Chase · Ultimate Rewards (Sapphire Reserve card)High Riskbenefit removed Both $250 Edit credits usable on back-to-back stays → Restriction withdrawn as an error — both credits still work on back-to-back stays
Around August 10, 2026, a Chase Travel guide page began stating that back-to-back stays at the same Edit property beginning within 24 hours of the previous checkout count as a single stay, with only the first booking earning The Edit's $250 credit. The language was spotted August 15 and removed by August 17–18. On August 18, a Chase spokesperson confirmed to Thrifty Traveler that the guide contained incorrect information and that no changes have been made to the credit. Doctor of Credit reports data points of both credits still posting on back-to-back stays. The restriction was never enforced.
What to do: No action needed. The restriction was withdrawn; booking two consecutive two-night stays at the same property still earns both $250 credits.
minor2026-08-06Amtrak · Amtrak Guest RewardsStablebenefit removed no stated gift card redemption limit → 2 gift cards per 24 hours; $300 per 7 days
Effective August 6, 2026, Amtrak Guest Rewards limits third-party gift card redemptions to two gift cards per rolling 24-hour period and $300 in aggregate value per 7-day period, regardless of gift card brand, denomination, or delivery method, with over-limit attempts automatically blocked. Amtrak announced the change to members by email in advance, framing it as protection against fraud and unauthorized redemptions, and the limits now appear in the program's published terms and conditions, which also warn that circumvention attempts can result in forfeiture of points or account suspension. Gift cards redeem at roughly 1 cent per point, so the cap chiefly affects members who cash out large balances rather than redeeming for train travel, where per-point value is typically higher. The program is fed by Amtrak's co-branded FNBO Mastercards.
What to do: Large balances destined for gift cards now need to be drained in $300 weekly increments — or better, redeemed for travel at higher value.
up to 2 miles per $1 (reloads) → 1 mile per $1 (spend, flight required)
Effective August 5, 2026, the Delta–Starbucks partnership returns to earning 1 SkyMile per $1 spent at Starbucks cafés (excluding tax, tips, gift cards, and alcohol), replacing the reload-based model that paid up to 2 miles per $1 on $100+ reloads. Reloading a Starbucks card no longer earns anything — Delta confirmed only spending does. The real change: earning now requires a qualifying Delta flight within the previous 12 months. Existing linked members get a one-time grace period through October 5, 2026; newly linked members earn for their first 12 months. For active Delta flyers the new model is simpler and broader; for optimizers the rate is halved, and for non-flyers earning stops entirely.
What to do: If you reload Starbucks cards for miles (or to burn card dining credits), note that reloads now earn nothing — only register spend counts, and only if you've flown Delta in the past year.
moderate2026-08-01PayPal · PayPal RewardsStablebenefit removed Effective August 1, 2026, PayPal removed the ability to redeem PayPal Rewards points for cash back to a PayPal balance, bank account, or debit card. Points remain usable for other redemption options at checkout. The change applies to the PayPal Rewards program; the PayPal Cashback Mastercard's card cash back is a separate system — though redemption problems on that card surfaced within days of this change.
What to do: If you hold PayPal Rewards points and wanted cash, use remaining redemption options deliberately — and see our coverage of the related card redemption problems.
Effective August 1, 2026, the Resy statement credits on the American Express Platinum and Gold cards apply only at U.S. restaurants displaying a "Resy Credit eligible" badge on the Resy website or app at the time of purchase, rather than at all Resy-listed venues. At launch, roughly 200 of about 10,000 listed venues were not marked eligible, largely tied to the ongoing Tock integration. American Express states that no previously eligible venues were removed and that more venues will be added as Tock restaurants become bookable on Resy. The practical change is that eligibility is now venue-specific and can change at any time, so cardholders should verify the badge before dining.
What to do: Check for the "Resy Credit eligible" badge on the venue's Resy page before counting on the credit.
1,000 status points per 3,000 promo bonus points → 0
In late July 2026 (date approximate), the terms of Atmos Rewards Shopping's limited-time spending promotions began stating that bonus points do not count toward Atmos Rewards status points, and Alaska Airlines confirmed the policy to Frequent Miler on July 29, 2026. Previously, these promotion bonuses counted toward status at the standard partner rate of 1,000 status points per 3,000 redeemable points, historically worth around 2,000 status points per year to regular portal users. Standard shopping portal earnings still count toward status; only limited-time promotion bonuses are excluded. The change took effect mid-qualification-year without member notification.
What to do: Portal spending still earns status points at the 3,000:1,000 rate — just don't count limited-time bonus points toward a status run.
all members → Aeroplan 35K status or higher
Effective July 21, 2026, Aeroplan members must hold Aeroplan 35K status or higher to redeem points for Emirates first class, mirroring the elite-only restriction Emirates applied to its own Skywards program in May 2025. For members without status, this closes one of the most aspirational uses of Aeroplan points, which receive 1:1 transfers from American Express, Chase, Capital One, and Bilt. As a partial offset, Emirates premium economy became bookable with Aeroplan points on the same date, making Emirates the first Aeroplan partner bookable in all four cabins. Under the SQC qualification system, credit card spending counts toward reaching 35K status.
What to do: Aeroplan members without 35K status should book Emirates business instead, or note that card spend counts toward status under the SQC system.
minor2026-07-08American Express · Centurion Lounge network (Platinum, Business Platinum, Centurion and Delta Reserve cards)High Riskbenefit removed no time limit on layovers; guests on any flight → within 5 hours of connecting departure; guests on same flight only
Effective July 8, 2026, American Express tightened Centurion Lounge entry rules at all U.S. locations plus London Heathrow, Tokyo Haneda, Hong Kong, Sydney and Melbourne. Cardholders on a layover may now enter only within five hours of their connecting flight's departure, where previously connecting passengers faced no time limit. Guests must also be traveling on the same flight as the cardholder, closing the prior allowance for guests on separate itineraries. The three-hour limit before an originating flight is unchanged, as is the guest allowance itself. The changes were announced in February 2026 and apply to the Platinum, Business Platinum, Corporate Platinum, Centurion, and Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Reserve Business cards.
What to do: On long layovers, plan on entering no earlier than five hours before your next departure.
On July 8, 2026, Delta began selling Basic fares in Delta First, Delta Premium Select and Delta One (branded "Basic Business"), alongside Classic and Extra fares in select markets. Basic premium fares carry the same onboard product but assign seats only after check-in, earn fewer miles, include one fewer checked bag, exclude complimentary and paid upgrades and same-day changes, and can be changed or canceled only for a fee. Delta First Basic began flying July 8; Premium Select Basic and Basic Business went on sale July 8 and begin flying in September. Basic Business tickets keep Delta One check-in, Delta One Lounge and Sky Club access through January 18, 2027; from January 19, 2027, lounge entry on any premium Basic fare requires a separate credential such as a Sky Club membership or an eligible American Express card.
What to do: If lounge access, upgrade eligibility or full SkyMiles earning matters, confirm the fare is Classic or Extra before booking a premium cabin.
up to $100 per year → $0
Effective July 1, 2026, American Express removed the Shop Saks benefit from the U.S. consumer Platinum Card for all cardholders. The benefit had provided up to $50 in statement credits at Saks Fifth Avenue in each half of the calendar year, for up to $100 annually. New applicants stopped receiving it on March 26, 2026, and after an initial report that existing cardholders would keep it, American Express confirmed the benefit would end for everyone on the same July 1 date. Saks Global filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2026. American Express said it would introduce new Platinum-specific Amex Offers at other retailers, which are targeted, rotating promotions rather than a guaranteed credit.
American Express ended the ability to transfer Membership Rewards points to Etihad Guest. The last day for transfers was June 29, 2026; the partnership ended June 30. The previous ratio had been 1:1. Other U.S. transferable currencies (Citi, Capital One, Bilt) continue to offer Etihad transfers at 1:1.
What to do: Use remaining Etihad miles already transferred; for new awards rely on Citi, Capital One, or Bilt.
moderate2026-06-26Avianca · LifeMiles (LifeMiles+ subscription)Stablebenefit removed Effective June 26, 2026, Avianca removed free award ticket changes and cancellations from the LifeMiles+ subscription for new subscribers. The benefit had been a marquee feature of the Basic plan ($50 per month) and above, in a program otherwise known for steep change and cancellation fees. The change was made without announcement or member notification; it surfaced only through updated fine print on the subscription page. Members subscribed before the cutoff retain the benefit for 12 months, with Avianca reportedly counting the 12 months from each member's original subscription date rather than from June 26. LifeMiles receives transfers from American Express, Citi, and Capital One at 1:1.
What to do: Existing subscribers should confirm when their own 12-month grace period ends before booking speculative awards.
awards bookable for any traveler → up to four listed members (Gold and Platinum exempt via contact center)
In mid-June 2026 (date approximate; announced May 12 and live the week of June 16), Qatar Airways Privilege Club stopped allowing members to redeem Avios for any traveler and now requires the passenger to be on the member's "My List," which holds up to four other Privilege Club members and is subject to a 30-day account maturity period. Creating a list also requires having credited a Qatar Airways or partner flight or holding a co-branded card, so members who only transfer bank points or move Avios from British Airways initially could not book for anyone but themselves. On July 22, 2026 Qatar exempted Gold and Platinum members, who may book for any traveler through the contact center. The change affects U.S. members who transfer to Privilege Club from American Express, Citi, Capital One or Bilt.
What to do: If you transfer points to Privilege Club to book for family, add them to My List first, and consider whether British Airways or another Avios program is the better place to redeem.
First spotted on cardholder statements by Travel with Grant — Wells Fargo is ending the ability to move points between household members' accounts.
What to do: Two-player households with Autograph cards: consolidate points before the cutoff.
Events with Amex (dedicated Platinum benefit) → general Amex Experiences access only
Effective June 10, 2026, American Express removed Events with Amex as a Platinum Card benefit, according to change-in-terms notices that appeared on cardholder statements in late March 2026. Amex says cardholders can still access special tickets, offers, and cardmember experiences at select events through its general Amex Experiences program, but there is no longer a Platinum-specific events benefit with defined entitlements. The change was communicated alongside the Centurion Lounge access restrictions that took effect July 8, 2026 and the Uber VIP removal on May 7, 2026.
75% bonus at $100,000+ balances → 50% at $100,000–$999,999; 75% requires $1 million+
With the late-May 2026 relaunch of Preferred Rewards as BofA Rewards, the 75% credit card rewards bonus previously available at the $100,000 Platinum Honors tier is now reserved for the new Premier tier, which requires $1 million or more in qualifying Bank of America and Merrill balances. Customers holding $100,000–$999,999 (renamed Preferred Honors) receive a 50% bonus instead, cutting the popular flat-cashback setup on the Unlimited Cash Rewards card from an effective 2.625% to 2.25% and the Customized Cash choice category from 5.25% to 4.5%. Existing members keep their prior tier benefits for at least six months, through roughly November 2026. The relaunch also opened the program to all eligible checking customers with a new 10% entry-level bonus and no minimum balance.
What to do: Grandfathered members should confirm when their own transition date falls and re-evaluate whether the 2.25% effective rate still beats alternatives.
102,000 miles (EWR–ATH first, one-way) → 117,000 miles
Effective May 20, 2026, Emirates Skywards increased the miles required for Classic Rewards and Upgrade Rewards across much of its network by roughly 15% on average, with the change appearing in the online mileage calculator several days in advance and no direct member communication. Documented first class examples include Newark–Athens rising from 102,000 to 117,000 miles one-way and New York–Dubai from 163,500 to 188,000, with roughly proportional increases in other cabins. As a partial offset, Saver-level pricing became available on one-way business class awards, which previously required the more expensive Flex Plus tier or a roundtrip booking. Skywards receives transfers from US currencies including Capital One (1,000:750) and Bilt (1:1).
What to do: Check the new one-way business class Saver rates before dismissing the program; they can undercut the old Flex Plus prices.
For Basic Economy tickets purchased on or after May 18, 2026 (announced April 9, 2026), AAdvantage elite members are no longer eligible for complimentary advance seat selection, complimentary domestic upgrades, or systemwide upgrades. The restriction applies to all elite tiers and also to elite members of oneworld partner programs. Combined with the December 2025 elimination of mileage earning, Basic Economy fares now carry essentially no AAdvantage recognition beyond boarding priority and elite checked-bag allowances. Basic Economy checked bags also began costing $5 more than on standard economy fares on the same date.
What to do: Elites who want any status benefits should book Main Cabin or higher on American.
moderate2026-05-17Citi · ThankYou RewardsElevatedBenefit removed ThankYou members can no longer share/combine points between accounts, ending a popular household strategy.
What to do: Households must now plan transfers from each account separately.
Uber VIP status → Signature Support for Amex (phone support)
Effective May 7, 2026, Uber VIP status is no longer included with the Platinum and Centurion cards' $200 annual Uber Cash benefit. Uber VIP had given cardholders priority matching with top-rated drivers in eight U.S. markets, including New York City, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, and Philadelphia. It has been replaced by Signature Support for Amex, a phone-based customer service tier with 24/7 live agents accessible through the Uber, Uber Eats, and Postmates apps. The $200 Uber Cash credit itself is unchanged. The change was announced in cardholder notices in late March 2026 and is documented on Uber's help pages.
minor2026-05-01Bilt · Bilt Rewards (Rent Day transfer bonuses)Elevatedbenefit removed bonus on unlimited points transferred → bonus on first 100,000 points transferred
Beginning with the May 1, 2026 Rent Day promotion to the Avios programs, Bilt imposed a cap limiting its monthly transfer bonuses to the first 100,000 points transferred; points moved beyond that amount transfer at the standard ratio with no bonus. Frequent Miler initially hoped the cap was a one-off, but it reappeared on the June 2026 Rent Day (TAP Air Portugal), and View from the Wing confirmed the structure. Bilt's Rent Day bonuses had been the largest in the industry, with Platinum members previously able to apply bonuses of up to 125% to unlimited amounts — one documented pre-cap transfer turned 285,000 points into 641,250 partner miles. The cap chiefly affects members who accumulate large balances through rent, card spend, or the Rakuten partnership and save them for a single large bonus transfer.
What to do: Large balances can still move in full at 1:1 — but plan bonus-maximizing transfers in 100,000-point monthly tranches.
Polaris Lounge access, 2 checked bags, seat selection included (lowest Polaris fare) → United Club only, 1 checked bag, paid seat selection (basic Polaris fare)
United announced on April 3, 2026 that Polaris business class and Premium Plus premium economy would be sold in three tiers — basic, standard and flexible — on long-haul international, transcontinental and select Hawaii routes, with basic fares on sale in select markets within days and expanding through 2026. Basic Polaris fares require paying for seat selection, include one free checked bag instead of two, grant United Club access but not Polaris Lounge access, allow no changes or refunds, and are not eligible for paid upgrades to Polaris Studio. Mileage earning on basic fares is reduced to a basic-economy-style structure (0–6x per dollar without a United card, 3–9x with one), and these fares earn Premier Qualifying Points but no Premier Qualifying Flights. United stated that MileagePlus and partner award tickets continue to book into non-basic fare classes for now.
What to do: When comparing Polaris fares, price the standard tier — the basic tier is the old lowest fare with benefits removed, not a new discount.
5 miles per $1 (general members) → 3 miles per $1 without a United card; 0 on Basic Economy
Effective for tickets purchased on or after April 2, 2026 (announced February 19, 2026), United restructured MileagePlus earning so rates depend on both Premier status and whether the member holds a United card. General members without a card dropped from 5 to 3 miles per dollar on standard fares and now earn nothing on Basic Economy; elite members without a card also earn less than before. Cardholders earn more than previously and receive at least 10% off United award tickets (15% for elites with a card), plus expanded Polaris Saver access.
What to do: If you fly United without a United card, compare earning against a transferable-points card before crediting flights.
In late March 2026 (date approximate; documented March 26), Singapore Airlines quietly increased the cost of its dynamically priced KrisFlyer Access awards, which launched November 1, 2025 as part of the program's broader award changes. Rates rose roughly 3–4% in First and Business Class and up to about 11% in Premium Economy and Economy. Because Access awards have no published chart, the change was made without any notice and surfaced only through independent tracking. KrisFlyer receives 1:1 or near-1:1 transfers from Chase, American Express, Citi, Capital One, and Bilt, so the change affects US members redeeming transferred points when Saver and Advantage space is sold out.
What to do: Treat Access awards as a last resort and price them against cash fares each time; the unpublished rates can move again without notice.
As of March 1, 2026, American removed several Loyalty Point Reward choices: the 30% Loyalty Point earning bonus at the 100,000-point level, Bang & Olufsen product choices at the 250K, 400K, 550K, and 750K levels, and Flagship First dining pass choices at the 400K–750K levels. New options were added at the same time, including AA Vacations credits and AAdvantage Exchange gifts, and the 60,000-point partner bonus rose from 20% to 25% but gained a cap on additional Loyalty Points earned. The removal of the 100K-level 30% bonus makes upper-tier status harder to reach for members who relied on partner and portal earning. Elite status thresholds themselves were unchanged for 2026.
all members → Qantas Silver status or higher
Effective February 18, 2026, only Qantas Frequent Flyer members holding Silver status or higher can book Emirates first class Classic Flight Rewards, extending Emirates' own elite-only award policy to a partner program. A related rule effective January 21, 2026 requires all passengers on Emirates first class awards booked with Qantas points to be at least nine years old, even when traveling with an adult. Existing bookings were honored, though changes requiring reissue can trigger the new rules. Before these changes, Qantas points — transferable 1:1 from American Express, Citi, and Capital One — had been one of the easier routes for US members without Emirates status to book Emirates first class.
What to do: Without Qantas status, plan Emirates redemptions in business class or via programs where you hold the required elite tier.
1x on rent (with 5 card transactions/month) → 250 points/month base, up to 1.25x with qualifying card spend
With the February 7, 2026 launch of Bilt's new card lineup (issued by Cardless, replacing the Wells Fargo Bilt Mastercard), earning points on rent or mortgage payments was restructured. Under the old card, 1x on rent required only five card transactions per statement period. Under the new system, cardholders either fund housing earning through Bilt Cash (4% earned on non-housing card spend) or choose a tiered option in which the rent earning rate scales with everyday card spend — up to 1.25x for those spending 100%+ of their housing cost on the card, but only a 250-point monthly base for those below the minimum spend tier. Members who put little non-housing spend on the card earn substantially less on rent than before. Two of the three new cards also carry annual fees.
What to do: Renters with little other card spend should compare their new effective earning rate before renewing around Bilt.
Beginning around February 5, 2026 (date approximate), United TravelBank deposits stopped triggering the up to $200 annual airline incidental fee credit on the Platinum and Business Platinum cards for cardholders who had selected United as their airline. For years these deposits, which convert to face-value United flight credit, had coded as reimbursable fees, making TravelBank the most common way to use the benefit without paying bag or seat fees. Doctor of Credit reported the change on February 16, 2026 based on cardholder reports and phone confirmations from Amex, and Frequent Miler confirmed on March 9, 2026 that no successful reimbursements had been reported in more than a month. Amex never listed TravelBank as an eligible purchase, so this is an enforcement change rather than a change to published terms; the credit remains usable for checked bags, seat selection, in-flight purchases, and similar incidental fees.
What to do: Use the airline credit on actual incidental fees (bags, seats, in-flight purchases) rather than stored-value loads.
Free (guests and authorized users) → $45/guest; $125/year per authorized user
Effective February 1, 2026 (announced June 2025), Venture X and Venture X Business cardholders lost complimentary guest access at Capital One Lounges, Landings, and Priority Pass lounges, and authorized users lost automatic lounge access entirely. Guests now cost $45 per adult ($25 for children) at Capital One Lounges and $35 at Priority Pass lounges, while authorized-user lounge access costs $125 per year each. Guest privileges are retained only by accounts spending $75,000 or more per calendar year, with 2025 spend counting first. This dismantles what had been one of the card's defining benefits since launch.
What to do: If you rely on family lounge access, weigh the $125 authorized-user pass or the $75K spend threshold against other premium cards.
$700 (Diamond) / $400 (Platinum) → $500 / $250
Effective February 1, 2026 (announced early December 2025), Delta reduced the value of the American Express statement credit option within Medallion Choice Benefits: Diamond members' credit dropped from $700 to $500 and Platinum members' from $400 to $250. The reduction arrived alongside improvements to three other Choice Benefit options (gifting status, bonus miles, and Delta travel vouchers), and Delta's announcement highlighted the improvements without calling out the credit cut. Members who selected the statement credit before February 1, 2026 kept the higher amount, and Delta deposited make-up value by mid-February for members who had already chosen one of the improved options. Medallion qualification thresholds were unchanged for 2026.
What to do: Diamonds and Platinums who want the Amex credit should weigh the improved bonus-mile and voucher options against the reduced credit before selecting.
2 checked bags (Mosaic 1); up to 8 companion upgrades; 3 free drinks → 1 checked bag; 2 companions (Mosaic 1–2); 1 free drink
Effective February 1, 2026, JetBlue reduced several Mosaic status benefits, announced October 15, 2025. Mosaic 1 members now receive one free checked bag instead of two, while Mosaic 2 through 4 keep two. Complimentary EvenMore extra-legroom seat upgrades for companions on the same reservation are now limited to two companions for Mosaic 1 and 2, down from up to eight. All Mosaic members receive one complimentary alcoholic drink in Core, down from three. The same update added positive changes, including higher earning for Mosaic 3 and 4, additional Move to Mint certificates for Mosaic 4, Family Tiles, and a status year extended through January. TrueBlue receives transfers from Chase, American Express, Citi and Capital One.
minor2026-01-15Chase · Marriott Bonvoy (Ritz-Carlton card)High Riskbenefit removed Unlimited free lounge guests → 2 free guests per visit
: Effective January 15, 2026 (communicated to cardholders December 12, 2025), Ritz-Carlton Credit Card holders and their authorized users may bring at most two free guests per visit into Priority Pass lounges and Chase Sapphire Lounges by The Club, with additional guests charged $27 each. Previously the card allowed unlimited free guests, an industry-leading benefit. The card remains closed to new applicants and still includes free authorized users, each with their own Priority Pass membership and two-guest allowance.
What to do: Families can add free authorized users, each of whom retains their own two-guest allowance.
excess elite nights roll over to next year → no rollover
As part of the Hilton Honors 2026 refresh announced November 18, 2025, Hilton eliminated elite rollover nights effective January 1, 2026. Qualifying nights earned beyond a member's tier threshold had previously carried over to the following year's status qualification; rollover nights accumulated in 2025 still count toward 2026 status, but nights earned in 2026 will not roll into 2027, and every year now starts at zero. The removal came alongside lowered qualification thresholds for Gold (25 nights, down from 40) and Diamond (50 nights, down from 60), which partially offsets the loss for many members. Hilton stated the benefit was rarely used and not well understood.
What to do: Members who banked large rollover balances should use the 2025-earned nights toward 2026 status; after that, plan each qualification year standalone.
Status: draft
Following Vacasa's acquisition by Casago, the Wyndham–Vacasa partnership ended December 1, 2025 (announced October 30, 2025). The last day to book or modify Vacasa stays with Wyndham points was November 30, 2025, with new or modified stays required to check out by January 31, 2026; existing reservations beyond that date were honored. Since 2021 this had been one of the best uses of Wyndham points, with entire rentals bookable from 15,000 points per night.
Effective for bookings ticketed November 1, 2025 (announced August 25, 2025), KrisFlyer raised Saver and Advantage award rates on Singapore Airlines and Star Alliance partners by roughly 5–20% depending on route and cabin, with US–Singapore premium cabin Saver awards among the hardest hit; a small number of short-haul economy rates decreased. Star Alliance partner awards rose about 5–12%. The program also introduced dynamically priced Access awards on Singapore Airlines flights when chart-level award space is unavailable. This affects all major US transferable currencies, which transfer to KrisFlyer at 1:1.
moderate2025-10-16Chase · Ultimate Rewards → Emirates SkywardsHigh Riskbenefit removed Effective 12:00 a.m. ET on October 16, 2025, Chase Ultimate Rewards ended points transfers to Emirates Skywards, removing the partner entirely rather than cutting the ratio. The change was disclosed via a notice quietly added to Chase's transfer page in mid-August 2025, giving members roughly two months' notice. It followed Citi and American Express reducing their Emirates transfer ratios from 1:1 to 5:4 earlier in 2025; Chase reportedly preferred dropping the partner to offering a below-1:1 ratio. The removal left Capital One and Bilt as the remaining major US transfer routes to Emirates at the time.
What to do: Chase members wanting Emirates awards must now route points through other currencies such as Bilt.
selected airline + any airline first/business → selected airline only
Effective September 18, 2025 (announced June 18, 2025), American Express restricted the Business Platinum card's 35% Pay With Points rebate to flights on the cardholder's selected qualifying airline only. Previously the rebate also applied to first and business class tickets on any airline booked through Amex Travel, which allowed points to be redeemed at an effective rate of up to 1.54 cents each on international premium cabins. The rebate remains capped at 1 million points back per calendar year, and the selected airline — limited to US carriers — can be changed each January. The change landed the same day as the Platinum card refresh and $895 fee increase but is a separate reduction.
What to do: Business Platinum holders should choose their selected airline deliberately each January; the 1.54-cent effective rate now exists only there.
minor2025-08-24Citi · ThankYou Rewards (Strata Premier and Prestige cards)Elevatedbenefit removed $100 per 10,000 points → $75 per 10,000 points
Effective August 24, 2025, redeeming ThankYou Points for cash (statement credit or check) from the Citi Strata Premier and the discontinued Citi Prestige returns $75 per 10,000 points instead of $100, a 25% reduction. Citi notified cardholders by email beginning May 19, 2025. Citi confirmed a workaround: cardholders who also hold a Citi Double Cash or Custom Cash card linked to the same ThankYou account continue to cash out at 1 cent per point. Transfers to airline and hotel partners were unaffected by this change.
What to do: If you cash out ThankYou points, hold a linked Double Cash or Custom Cash, which preserves the 1-cent rate.
Effective August 21, 2025 (announced May 21, 2025), United eliminated the Excursionist Perk — the free one-way segment on qualifying multi-city award itineraries that had replaced free stopovers in 2016 — for all new bookings, with existing bookings honored unless changed. The same date, Premier members lost instant upgrades at ticketing on full-fare Y, B, and M economy fares. United also removed its fixed mileage upgrade award chart from its website on November 24, 2025, shifting mileage upgrades toward variable pricing.
no minimum age → 9 years and older
Effective August 15, 2025, Emirates Skywards made passengers aged 8 and under ineligible for first class Classic Rewards and Upgrade Rewards, appearing only as a footnote added to the program's terms and conditions with no member communication. Children of any age can still fly Emirates first class on cash tickets; the restriction applies solely to award bookings and mileage upgrades. The change followed the May 2025 restriction of first class awards to Skywards elite members and preceded similar age rules adopted by partner programs Qantas and Aeroplan in 2026. Skywards receives transfers from US currencies including Capital One and Bilt.
What to do: Families wanting a child under 9 in Emirates first class must buy a cash ticket or seat the child in business.
American Express ended Membership Rewards transfers to HawaiianMiles, with June 30, 2025 as the last day to transfer. Because HawaiianMiles could be moved onward to Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan at 1:1 following Alaska's acquisition of Hawaiian, this had been the only way to convert Membership Rewards points into Alaska miles. American Express posted the notice on its points transfer page in advance. After the cutoff, no transferable-currency path from Membership Rewards to Alaska's program remained.
What to do: Membership Rewards holders wanting Alaska awards must now earn Alaska miles directly or via its co-branded cards.
moderate2025-06-24ANA · ANA Mileage ClubStableaward price increase For reservations and tickets issued on or after June 24, 2025, ANA raised international award prices across multiple zones and cabins, with the steepest increases in premium cabins — high-season first class between Japan and North America reached 150,000 miles one-way. The same date, ANA discontinued its Star Alliance Round the World award, long regarded as one of the best uses of the program; tickets issued by June 23, 2025 remained valid. This was ANA's second devaluation in fourteen months, following the April 2024 chart increases. As a partial offset, one-way award bookings became available for the first time, including on partners. ANA Mileage Club receives 1:1 transfers from American Express Membership Rewards.
What to do: Low and regular season ANA awards remain reasonable; avoid high-season premium cabins where increases were largest.
upgrade to the best available room, including suites → complimentary upgrade, subject to availability
In May 2025 (date approximate; documented May 17 by View from the Wing, comparing an April 30 snapshot of the terms), Marriott quietly revised section 4.3.c of the Bonvoy terms and conditions. The prior text promised Platinum Elite members and above a complimentary upgrade "to the best available room," subject to availability at arrival, for the length of stay. The revised text promises only a complimentary upgrade subject to availability and adds brand-level exclusions, removing members' ability to cite the terms when a hotel declines to upgrade to an available suite. Marriott did not notify members of the change. The upgrade benefit itself still lists suites and premium rooms as possible outcomes; what changed is the standard hotels are held to.
What to do: Use Nightly Upgrade Awards for stays where a suite matters; check-in upgrades are now fully at the hotel's discretion.
Effective May 12, 2025, Emirates limited first class Classic Rewards bookings to Skywards Silver, Gold, and Platinum members, cutting off general (Blue) members regardless of mileage balance. The policy appeared as a website notice on May 10, giving roughly two days' notice and no direct member communication. This closed one of the most aspirational redemptions to holders of transferred US bank points unless they hold Emirates status, which US members can obtain through the program's co-branded credit cards. Upgrades from business to first class with miles remained available.
What to do: Non-elites wanting Emirates first class can book business and upgrade with miles, or earn status via the US co-branded cards.
moderate2025-04-04IHG · IHG One RewardsStableaward price increase 120,000 points (unofficial cap, non-resort InterContinental) → 149,000–227,000 points documented
Around April 4, 2025 (date approximate; unannounced and first documented via FlyerTalk member reports), IHG raised or removed the unofficial award pricing caps at many of its top properties. Non-resort InterContinental hotels previously capped around 120,000 points per night began pricing higher — the InterContinental Paris Champs-Elysées reached 149,000 points, the InterContinental Osaka 192,000, and the InterContinental Bora Bora up to 227,000 points per night, versus a historical 70,000–100,000 range at that resort. The change chiefly reduces the outsized value previously available on peak nights when caps bound pricing below the cash-equivalent rate. IHG has used dynamic pricing without a published chart since 2020, so the recalibration surfaced only through member and independent documentation.
What to do: Check effective cents-per-point on peak dates; the old cap-driven sweet spots are largely gone.
moderate2025-03-24Chase · MileagePlus (United co-branded cards)High Riskfee increase $525 (United Club card) → $695
Effective March 24, 2025 for new applicants (existing cardholders at renewals on or after August 1, 2025, and January 1, 2026 for the Explorer card), Chase raised annual fees across the United co-branded lineup: Explorer from $95 to $150, Quest from $250 to $350, and Club from $525 to $695, with similar increases on the business cards. New statement credits and benefits were added at the same time, including rideshare credits, United TravelBank cash, and annual award-flight discounts. Separately, the Premier upgrades-on-award-tickets benefit ended August 1, 2025, and the Explorer card's two annual United Club one-time passes now require the primary cardholder or an authorized user to be present. The no-fee Gateway card was unchanged.
What to do: Weigh the new credits against the higher fee at renewal; the no-fee Gateway card is the escape hatch.
$650 (guests and Star Alliance lounges included) → $750 (individual, no guests); $1,400 All Access
Effective March 24, 2025, and announced the same day, United restructured United Club membership into two tiers. The Individual membership costs $750 or 94,000 miles, up from $650 or 85,000 miles, and no longer includes guest privileges or access to Star Alliance partner lounges. Those benefits now require the new All Access membership at $1,400 or 175,000 miles. Elite discounts on membership ($50 for Platinum, $100 for 1K) were eliminated. Existing members keep their prior benefits until their membership expires. The change was announced alongside the United co-branded card annual fee increases and, from May 1, 2025, a three-hour pre-departure limit for one-time pass holders.
What to do: The United Club card at $695 now costs less than a standalone Individual membership and includes guest access; compare before renewing a membership.
Unlimited Sky Club visits → 10 per year (Platinum cards); 15 (Delta Reserve)
Effective February 1, 2025 (announced in 2023), Delta capped Sky Club access for American Express cardholders: Platinum and Business Platinum cards receive 10 visits per Medallion Year and Delta Reserve cards receive 15, replacing unlimited access. Unlimited access can be restored by spending $75,000 in a calendar year on the relevant card. All Sky Club entries within a 24-hour period count as a single visit, and limits are per card, so holders of multiple eligible cards can stack allotments. The change was among the most significant lounge-access reductions to reach a mass cardholder base.
What to do: Cluster same-day lounge stops into one 24-hour "visit," and stack allotments if you hold multiple eligible cards.
Fixed MileSAAver / AAnytime charts → Dynamic “Flight Awards” pricing only
American Airlines AAdvantage (Citi transfers; core US program) retired MileSAAver and AAnytime fixed charts for AA-operated flights and moved fully to dynamic “Flight Awards” pricing (previously Web Specials). A new “starting from” chart was published as a floor only. Partner awards remained chart-based. This formalized ongoing devaluation risk for US members. Approximate date used as ~2023-05-01 per source framing; actual cutover was early April. Distinct from later AA entries on the tracker.
United removed its published Star Alliance/partner award chart without advance notice and moved partner awards to dynamic pricing. Many partner awards immediately rose approximately 10% (examples: Europe partner economy and business). This completed the shift begun with United-operated flights in November 2019.
What to do: Once partner charts disappear, residual fixed pricing evaporates quickly; redeem remaining high-value partner awards promptly.
Effective for travel on or after November 15, 2019 (announced April 2019), United stopped publishing an award chart for its own flights. Award prices began fluctuating based on demand with no published minimums or maximums. Partner charts remained published at the time. Close-in booking fees were also eliminated, but higher dynamic prices often appeared within 30 days of departure. Peak-date and high-demand awards rose above prior chart ceilings.
What to do: Dynamic pricing removes both floors and ceilings; book when a good price appears rather than waiting for “saver” levels that no longer exist.
Effective January 1, 2018, Alaska and American ended most reciprocal elite benefits and restricted domestic earning to codeshares only. Alaska’s award chart for American flights was revised (some domestic business/first lower, most other bands higher). International American flights continued to earn Alaska miles.
What to do: Partnership changes can quietly eliminate previously reliable award and elite access; diversify partner strategies.
In early February 2015, shortly after the launch of its new five-tier award structure and revenue-based earning, Delta removed its published award charts from its website. Members could no longer see fixed minimum or maximum mileage requirements by region and cabin; prices were visible only via the award search calendar. The removal eliminated transparency and made future increases harder to track in real time. Delta stated the calendar provided a more accurate view of availability and pricing.
What to do: Once charts disappear, assume ongoing quiet upward pressure on prices; redeem while residual fixed levels remain visible.
